Bar Mutz: The NJ Hot Spot Everyone’s Talking About

Bar Mutz is the newest place in Bergen County everyone’s talking about—and not in a quiet way. More like, “good luck getting a reservation on a weekend” kind of way.

Naturally, I had to investigate. For the blog, of course. And because of my Italian nature.

🎸 The Vibe: Immaculate

Bar Mutz is loud. Theres graffiti on the walls, stickers on literally everything, the music cranked up, and the lights are dim. But it somehow works and creates the most intimate dining experience.

It’s definitely date night central—intimate enough for two but way too rowdy (and reservation-impossible) for big groups.

🍴 What We Ordered (And What Slapped)

We came, we ordered, we carb-loaded:

  • Mozz Water Shots – No actual mozzarella in this (boo), just a cheeky name and a good tasting shot.
  • Bar Mutz Dirty Martini – Vodka + pepperoncini juice = surprisingly good chaos.

Dirty Martini

  • “Above the RimEspresso Martini – Solid, but the dirty martini stole my heart.

Espresso Martini

  • Garlic Bread – Could’ve been more garlicky, but still a good vessel for my mozz + proscuitto.
  • Mozz + Prosciutto – $24 and mostly prosciutto? Meh. Wish we’d just done the mozz for $19.

Mozz +Prosciutto

  • Mozzarella SticksA DREAM. Yes, they did fall apart a little but when we tried to pick them up, but who cares—they’re delicious and lived up to the hype.

Mozz Sticks

  • Spicy Rig – Not a standout. The cream sauce was just okay. It came with Mozzarella Whey which was unique. I’ve had better vodka / cream sauces elsewhere. I also didn’t find this to be all that spicy and I am usually pretty sensitive to spice.

Spicy Rig

  • Trattole – The STAR of the night. It comes with a short rib ragu + Bells Knoelle cheese. That cheese? Rubbed in garlic, coated in black pepper, shaved tableside fresh onto your dish for you to mix in and enjoy. Easily the most memorable bite here.

💥 Hits + Misses

Skip the mozz + prosciutto plate—too pricey for what you get IMO.
Don’t miss the trattole. Seriously. That dish alone could carry the whole meal.

Also… I didn’t get the tableside hand-pulled mozzarella bite—yes, that’s a thing, and yes, you get hand fed a piece of fresh mozz. Next time, I’m doing it. ($10 pp)

Also we didn’t opt for dessert, but the desserts here look phenomenal.

🤝 Service + Experience

Staff? Super friendly.
Pacing? Solid. You put in your full order up front, and the food comes out in waves pretty quickly.
Crowd? Loud, energetic, and clearly food obsessed.

🌟 Final Verdict: WORTH THE HYPE

Come for the cheese, stay for the pasta, and leave wondering how you can recreate their trattole at home.

I do think Bar Mutz is pricy, but certain things are definitely worth the hype + the cost. I would definitely pass on the Spicy Rig + maybe aim for the lemon pasta next time though.
