Tucked away in the middle of County Route 25 is Deer Mountain Inn. A gorgeous and cozy looking restaurant that had my hopes up just from the looks of it.
The vibe was interesting. We felt welcome. But, as with any hidden gem, I’ve got a lot to say about my time here.
Definitely do a reservation if you want to secure a spot on a weekend. We did a walk in where you can sit at one of the few couches they have and I was a huge fan of the casual vibe, but they filled up pretty quick. I preferred that to the table seating though. They also have a few bar seats.
📍 Location: 790 County Route 25, Tannersville NY
💰 Price: definitely on the expensive side!!
⏳ Vibe: rustic
What We Ordered:
Drinks:
The fair and square cocktail was quite plain despite the long list of delicious sounding ingredients. This cocktail boasts flavors of lavender and green tea, and has sake in it and it kind of just tasted watery. A bit of a disappointment for the cost.
Apps:
We started with their housemade sourdough. It was incredibly oily, dense, and moist. I very much so enjoyed this bread. It wasn’t the best bread I have ever had, but it was special. The bread is $10 and you have to pay separate for accompaniments. We got the oil with Saba. It was pretty good, but $14 for a side of bread with oil. The flavor of the oil reminded me of an oil and balsamic kind of vibe. I wish I tried more of the accompaniments, but I couldn’t justify the price or spending $20 on bread when it was just two of us.
Next up, the rabbit terrine. I learned what terrine was the hard way. my boyfriend loved this dish and ate almost the whole thing. Note: terrine is a dish similar to pate. It has rabbit, nuts, and herbs. So, this was not for me. I think if the rabbit was served warm I might’ve liked it. This was served cold. So it wasn’t my favorite.
What I was most excited for was the caesar salad. After a popular food influencer boasted this salad online, I was looking forward to it. It was a disappointment. I was served a flavorless bed of greens with cheese on top. It also cost $19. I felt it was not worth the cost. It looked beautiful, but I would recommend you skip this.
The last appetizer we tried were the fries. They are served “classic” or “tallow + garlic”. We got the tallow + garlic. These were thick cut fries. I really enjoyed them. I thought they were a little dry on the inside. But nonetheless a pretty tasty side of french fries.
Entree:
We only tried one entree, the wagyu bavette. It comes with creamed brussels sprouts, black garlic, cherry jus, and horseradish. If there is anything you try from this post at Deer Mountain Inn, let it be this. I won’t lie, I wasn’t tasting much of the horseradish. But I didn’t mind because I don’t love horseradish. The meat was tender, so succulent, it practically melted in your mouth. I barely needed to chew. The sauce it was in was immaculate. And my boyfriend, the cooked vegetable hater, was loving every bite of the flavorful and delicious creamed brussels sprouts. I think about this meal often, a tell tale sign that it was worth every penny. I would run back for this any day of the week.
Desserts:
We got two desserts, the first called Honey. the description says “Gelato, Caramel, Cake, Comb, Cream” for $15. I wasn’t impressed. there was something that tasted off. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
The other dessert we tried was the seasonal sorbet. It comes with these candied sunflower seeds that are sweet. And a fig syrup I believe it was. It was absolutely delicious. The flavor rotates and when we went it was mango. The flavors were incredible, a mix of flavors I would never put together myself and it was so delightful on the palette. At $4, try this!!
The Hits + Misses
⭐ Must-try dish – Wagyu Bavette, Sourdough Bread (you just need to try it)
🙃 Skip this one – Caesar Salad
Overall, I would definitely come back here and order the bread and wagyu bavette. I would love to try more things on the menu for sure since it is a small menu I’ve already tried quite a bit. I don’t think I would drive to the Catskills just to dine here, but if you’re in the area, the wagyu bavette is a memorable dish. Same with the seasonal sorbet, it was so unique I definitely would order it every time. You might just want to skip the caesar salad though…
