Just Tacos – Garfield, NJ

Tucked into a strip mall in Garfield is Just Tacos. Recently, my sister had a craving for tacos and had found them online. I had already heard of this place and so naturally we knew what we had to do: go see if it’s any good for ourselves. The name is Just Tacos – but they serve a variety of Mexican classics and a “secret menu” here.

While this place is a bit more on the casual side (We did take out but I think if you sit down you just order at the counter). Mostly everything felt homemade and fresh — from the guac to tortillas. (Although I don’t think the tortilla chips were homemade, personally.)

Usually I am not a huge fan of corn tortillas. I much prefer the texture of flour tortillas. But these homemade ones really knocked it out of the park. They were soft and not too thick.

What We Ordered

Chips & Guacamole

Like any good mexican meal, we started off with the chips and guac. The guac was good, nothing outstanding but in no means was it bad. Just nothing super special.

We also ordered the elote. We did an online order and you are given an option of tajin or cheetos so we picked cheetos and they must’ve not had them so we just got corn with a mayo crema and cotija which kind of disappointed! We added our own chili powder which helped.

Moving onto the mains, where things get really delicious. We decided to split two things: a birria quesadilla and carne asada tacos.

The tacos were absolutely amazing! Completely hit the spot and satisfied my taco craving. Like I said, I’m not typically a corn tortilla person, but these homemade ones were a dream. The steak was cooked well and it comes with onion, cilantro, and an avocado crema. I liked it. We ended up dipping everything into the delicious birria consome though.

Which brings me to the quesadilla. The consome has chunks of tender fatty beef pieces. It was everything you wanted a birria quesadilla to be. Flavorful, beefy and the consome just sends it over the top. Its apart of the “secret menu” which doesn’t seem like much of a secret, but it’s full of delicious items worth checking out like loaded fries.

Overall, I will be back to Just Tacos. The food was amazing, I was satisfied after my meal and it was worth the price point. I really enjoyed the tacos and quesadilla, and I would love to come back and try the loaded fries. Also, they get extra points for offering cactus on the menu since a lot of more casual Mexican spots typically don’t have this on the menu.
