Ranking the Mutz at Hoboken’s Mutz Fest 2025

Hoboken MutzFest brings 6 iconic Mutz Makers to one location to serve up a whole day of cheese, antipasto and italian tradition. (plus a cannoli eating competition!)

I went in with an open mind, an empty stomach, and a personal goal to find out who’s really making the best mutz around. Here’s how it all played out, based mostly on flavor. Because I’m no professional palate, but I know a good bite when I taste one.

🥇 1. M&P Biancamano’s (Hoboken)

The undisputed mozz boss. Salty in the best way, perfectly soft with that classic fresh-pulled texture. Balanced, flavorful, and just right. No notes—just more mutz please. Biancamano’s served a choice of salami or ham with mozz on bread and an extra slice of mozz on the side.

🥈 2. Vito’s Deli (Hoboken)

Solidly delicious. The kind of mutz that makes you want to grab a hunk of salami and call it dinner. Plus, they win bonus points for offering a full antipasto selection on the side. They offered a large selection but I got buffalo chicken pasta salad and mozz and some bread crisps.

🥉 3. Lisa’s Deli (Hoboken)

Lisa’s brought her A-game. While the mutz wasn’t quite as bold in flavor as Biancamano’s, the texture held up and the antipasto options gave it an extra edge. A respectable third-place finish from a Hoboken staple. Lisa’s served up foccacia, an italian style sandwich, charcuterie, mozz and bruschetta.

4. Vinnie’s Mootz (Lyndhurst)

I wanted to root for the hometown hero—but the mutz fell a little flat. It needed more salt and the texture was just a bit off for is. Not a bad bite, just… not a memorable one. The bar was high, and Vinnie’s felt a little underseasoned in comparison. Vinnie’s served up mozz with balsamic and basil and bruschetta.

😬 5. Tony Baloney’s / Mad Mutz

Creative? Yes. Confusing? Also yes. The mini mutz flight didn’t come with flavor descriptions, and some of the textures were just… off. Some overly wet, almost gelatinous and one that was black and came with no flavor description. These mozz balls that made me question my life choices. Mad mutz served up a flight of mini mozz balls while Tony’s served mozz sticks and offered a mozz pull competition.

Overall

Hoboken knows how to do mutz—and Biancamano’s reigned supreme to us. Mutz Fest was a glorious, cheese-stuffed time, even if some bites were better left behind. It also got kinda crowded at the end but at this point what food event isn’t?
